Vancouver & District Bowls Association

The Sport of Bowls in Metro Vancouver

V&D Bowler of the Year

The V&D Bowler of the Year was instituted to recognize the Male and Female bowlers who were most successful in V&D events.  The list of events which are eligible has changed over the years (at one point senior events were eligible, until it was pointed out that this was not fair, since non-seniors were ineligible and therefore were at a huge disadvantage.  The Bowler of the Year is also meant to encourage participation, since the more events you play in, the better chance you have to win.  Currently there are five events forom which a bowler may earn points towards the Bowler of the Year: Singles, Pairs, Fours, Mixed Pairs & Mixed Fours.  Bowlers receive points according to the following formula:

1st in “A” (Championship Flight)

4

2nd in “A” (Championship Flight)

3

1st in “B” (Consolation Flight) or 3rd overall

3

2nd in “B” (Consolation Flight) or 4th overall

2

Typically, a bowler who accumulates 10-12 points finds themselves in first place.  The maximum points a bowler could earn in one year is 20 (which has never been done - it would require a bowler winning all 5 events).  The following are the top finishers going back to 2006.

Champion of Champions Women's Singles For many years the V&D oversaw this tournament which was open to all women's club singles champions.  It was a straight knock-out tournament.  There waas no entry fee, since the participants had earned their way into the event.  The trophy was a solid silver bowl.  The event was suspended due to lack of participation; some clubs had trouble finishing their own singles, some champions were unwilling or unable to participate and not even the runner-up was allowed to substitute.  The trophy currently resides at Granville Park, one of whose members won the trophy more than anyone else.

Novice Singles (1st year bowlers) This event was begun in 1980 to give new women bowlers the same chance the novice men had had for decades.  There is a plaque which is awarded to the champion, which stays at the champs club-house for one year and is brought to the next year's V&D Novice Singles tournament to be awarded to that year's winner.  It is only open to 1st year bowlers (2nd year bowlers can enter the V&D Sophmore Singles).  As a result it is impossible for there to be repeat winner.
